Cannock Expanded League Cup 2018 - Masters

A fantastic event, I really enjoyed our first Expanded League Cup! So here's my tournament report.

There were 34 Masters, 6 Seniors and 2 Juniors. Obviously disappointing numbers for a League Cup for us, as our Standard Cups usually bring in a good amount more with us previously having an amazing 85 players for a League Cup. Obviously, we did run Expanded which is the Marmite format, although I have no idea why, I think it's fantastic playing with the older cards again. Gaining an advantage from N when you're not doing very well, not having to worry about the cost of Trade or Ultra Ball by have Propagation Exeggcute.
In my opinion, Expanded is amazing, I heard a few excuse of why people weren't coming with the best excuse being, I don't have the cards... you don't need to have every card from Black and White onward to play expanded, you need VS Seeker, Professor Sycamore, N and maybe Colress. Obviously the more Expanded stuff you have, the more fun you'll have, but as you'l see below, Expanded is full of Sun and Moon Archetypes.

There was a good mix of decks in my opinion, of course, nearly a quarter of the field was Zoroark, 2 of which made top 8, but other than Zoroark there were 20 other different deck archetypes in the room, the next favorite being Lucario GX with Focus Sash and Pickup Cards (Acerola and Scoop Up Cyclone), with 3 people playing this Archetype, 2 made it into top 8! Overall though, there were 9 different Fighting decks which was over a quarter of the field, so the Zoroark players did have to work hard.

Another detail I wanted to look at was what era decks were from, I think Standard cards play a huge part in expanded with a lot of Standard Pokemon being used with Expanded cards giving them a helping hand, the best example being Zoroark, this is a Sun & Moon Standard card which benefits hugely from the Propagation Exeggcute from Plasma Freeze and is backed up nicely by either Garbodor to turn of Abilities or Seismitoad EX to stop items being played. Overall though, I would count these decks as mainly Sun and Moon as it relies heavily on Sun and Moon cards. Therefore, here is my 'Era List':

  • 24 Sun and Moon
  • 5 XY
  • 5 Black and White

The Decks I classed as XY were Wailord, Darkrai, Greninja BREAK, Night March and Trevanant, all of these decks main attackers (or none attackers in some cases) were from XY sets.

The Black and White Decks were, Donphan, Archie's Blastoise and I also put Unown Damage under here too as I think this relies on Reuniclus which is from Black and White Base Set.

As I mention Unown Damage, I'm making this my stand out deck of the day, many people mentioned, upon the arrival of the Unowns from Lost Thunder, that there is a way to make this deck work in Expanded, but this is the first time I'd seen it in action. Watching Danveer in round 1 get his loop going, was pretty baffling, but he pulled it off and won game 1, he unfortunately didn't manage to secure the win for the match but the deck looked a lot of fun and I did have a few questions and Judge calls about it throughout the day, I think it's a great little loop that's been exploited but it really is hard to pull off, as Danveer found out. I hope the deck can gain some constancy somehow, I'm sure the new Magicarp and Wailord GX Tag Team Card could help out massively.

Thank you for reading and here are the Final Standings of the day, I will work at uploading the Top 8 Deck Lists ASAP and they will appear as links in the table below.
